“Vino de Pago” is the highest qualification observed by Spanish wine law. It’s a type of Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) limited to an exclusive group of wineries. The uniqueness of the location, soil, climate and our particular method of production are decisive factors in order to obtain wines that are distinct, exceptional and with an unmistakable personality. Dehesa del Carrizal acquired the qualification “Vino de Pago” in 2006.
According to The Vineyard and Wine Act 24/2003 of July 10th, “Pago” is a rural site with specific edaphic and microclimate conditions that differentiate it from its surroundings, thus obtaining wines of singular features and qualities. Additionally, the grape production, winemaking and bottling must take place within the estate defined by the “Pago”, in strict compliance with the production rules established by ministerial decree and specific for each “Pago”.
In European regulation, the various Spanish wine qualifications are included under the section Protected Designation of Origin (DOP). They are depicted in the following pyramid published by David Manso in “Vinetur” digital magazine.

Moreover, there is an association called “Grandes Pagos de España” (Great Spanish Pagos) whose registered members may be a “Pago” or other wineries that, according to the association’s criteria, also produce singular wines of great quality.
