The 2nd International Wine Summit encourages producers to develop new experiences associated with wine
One of the main conclusions reached at the 2nd International Wine Summit is the necessity to recover the domestic consumption of wine in Spain.
The current wine consumption in Spain is almost 20 litres per capita per year, very far from countries such as France (47.7 litres), Portugal (42.5 litres) or Italy (37.1 litres). Actually, Spain is ranked in 19th place in the world ranking of wine consumption, below countries such as Denmark, the Netherlands, Brazil, Russia, Japan or Canada. Experts also point out that the wine market in Spain is now suffering a tendency called “back to the den”. That is, Spanish people are consuming more wine at home than at restaurants.
In order to reactivate the domestic consumption, it has been pointed out the need to break with the image of an exclusive product and to promote a mutual knowledge between the caterer and the consumer. It is essential to properly communicate the importance of wine in cookery and to link it to the fame and prestige of the Spanish cuisine.
The experts also hint at another possible driving force to increase wine consumption: the commitment to wine tourism and the connection between the concept of drinking wine and that of living an environmental, gastronomic and cultural experience. It is not all about drinking wine, but about visiting the wine production area, getting to know the local cuisine, the landscape peculiarities and the surroundings of the vineyard or the local culture. Therefore it is fundamental for a wine to pass on the values of the region where it is created.
At Dehesa del Carrizal, this is what we call being “In harmony with the land”.
