The right arrangement of the stems ensures the right ventilation and good sun exposure of the bunches
The arrival of hot summer temperatures occurs simultaneously with the stem growth in our vineyard. June is the time when most of the work on our estate is related to growth and canopy management.
Our espalier training system requires a series of procedures on the vegetation in order to optimise the growth and the foliage efficiency. The key is a right arrangement of the stems, so that they remain upright. To that end, we make use of a wire system securing both the plant and the greatest verticality of each stem. It is a manual task requiring experience, for it will guarantee to a great extent the optimum state of health of the vineyard.
The objective is to arrange the stems in a way that ensures the right ventilation and the exposure of the bunches to the sun. Adequate ventilation is essential to reduce the presence of cryptogamic diseases, while the sunlight exposure will entail the suitable ripening of the fruit.
The canopy will be manipulated until the stems reach a satisfactory length, between 130 and 150 cm. At that point, their top is cut in order to maintain the right balance between the foliage surface and the grape production at all times. This balance between leaf and fruit production is important because it guarantees that the grape (red in this case) will produce more aromas and also more tannins.
As it is usual, all the tasks carried out on our fields share a fundamental objective: to obtain an excellent grape at its optimal stage of ripening.
Therefore, all the processes taking place in the vineyard are of great significance. There is no excellent wine without an excellent grape... and in order to obtain excellent fruit many months of careful work are required.
