Cabañeros National Park, a prime example of Mediterranean forest

Share ->

The Montes of Toledo is a stunning natural area that possesses one of the greatest characters of the Iberian Peninsula. This quartz formation, which separates the basins of the Tajo and the Guadiana over a distance of 350 km, truly stands out due to its highly diverse flora and fauna.

In between the provinces of Toledo and Ciudad Real, we can find potentially the leading example of Mediterranean forest within the entire Spanish national parks network: Cabañeros National Park. This protected area is a true natural gem due to its unique geological, botanical and faunal features.

Endangered species such as the Spanish Imperial Eagle, the Black Vulture, or the Iberian Lynx, together with a very important population of red, roe and fallow deer, have found their ideal habitat within Cabañeros National Park. It extends over 42 000 hectares where some Mediterranean botanical species —such as the holm, cork and gall oaks— coexist with others that are more typical of Atlantic woodlands (fern, holly and yew) or gallery forests (ash and birch trees). Due to such a high botanical diversity, the park is also home to unique landscapes such as the bohonales and trampales; these are very rare wetlands considered as Special Protection Areas due to the species living there, including some remarkable colonies of carnivorous plants such as the sundew (Drosera rotundifolia).

The result of this fanciful mix of flora and fauna is a spectacular setting which invites the traveler to walk around its paths, contemplate its landscapes and linger in the villages dotted around Cabañeros. There one can enjoy the excellent cuisine and, of course, sample any of the various wines offered by this unique destination which, thanks to a specific climate and soil characteristics, are truly exceptional.

If you wish to stay overnight there is a wide variety of rural accommodation, hotels, log cabins and campsites. Many adventure and active tourism options are also available either at Cabañeros National Park or in combination with other activities in nearby natural areas such as Lagunas de Ruidera and Tablas de Daimiel.
