From possible army field to privileged environment for the reintroduction of the Iberian lynx
Cabañeros National Park celebrates its 20th anniversary. Two decades of special protection in a privileged environment, shelter for large birds of prey such as the imperial eagle, and also the black vulture, the black stork, and mammals such as the deer, the roe deer and the wild boar. Two decades of intense work in favour of the conservation of a peculiar and varied wildlife, likely to be soon the setting for the reintroduction of the Iberian lynx.
The history of this National Park is renowned for the fact that it was about to become a military shooting range. In the late 80s, the Ministry of Defence acquired the estate, almost 40.000 acres in the heartland of the Montes de Toledo, with the initial purpose of setting up a shooting range facility in the area. This situation created an important citizens movement demanding to stop the project.
Locals together with environmental organizations achieved their goal: in 1988 the estate of Cabañeros was declared a natural park by the regional authority, the Junta de Castilla-La Mancha. Already in the 90s, on April 28th 1995, the Spanish parliament approved a plan whereby the estate of Cabañeros and part of its surroundings, with an area of almost 100.000 acres, was declared a National Park.
The estate of Dehesa del Carrizal is located within the bounds of the National Park and is fully identified with the values it represents. We are passionate about our land and committed to taking care of nature and to an oenology responsible with the environment and the traditions of the Montes de Toledo. For us, as for every neighbour in the region, belonging to this environment means a commitment to the park and its conservation, as well as a tremendous satisfaction in being able to contribute to the diffusion of the name Cabañeros National Park wherever our wines arrive.
